After the decline in air travel after September 11th, airlines are seeing a steady increase in air travel as people lose their jitters about the safety of flying. Although flying might be safer, statistically, than riding on a bus, booking an airplane ticket is certainly not as simple a matter as booking a bus ticket. Read on for some travel savvy tips for making this process easier.

1.         Alwayscheck multiple websites; different websites offer very different fares on thesame exact flight.  Always check avariety of websites, including Expedia-type websites, but don’t forget to trythe airlines’ websites themselves. Sometimes their rates are actually cheaper.

2.         Book inadvance unless you’re looking for a last-minute fare.  Always plan ahead when it comes to air traveland then watch the prices for about a month or two once you’ve decided on yourplans.  Buy when the price is lowest.

3.         If youhave a lot of flexibility, try for a last-minute fare.  A lot of airlines offer ridiculously lowprices on fares if you are willing to sit in the airport for a while waitingfor a flight that has room for you.  Lastminute fares can be a gold-mine.

4.         Searchfor different dates when you are looking for flights.  First check your most preferred dates andthen check dates before and after it. Airfare is a tricky business and it’s not always evident why priceschange from one day to the next.

5.         Considerthe days of the week that you are flying. Some days are more expensive than others; weekdays have a wholedifferent schema than weekend days do. Check both for the lowest price.

6.         Avoidbusiness travelers’ preferred times.  Notwanting to be away from family for too long, business travelers tend to flyfirst thing Monday morning in order to have Sunday night at home, but workMonday afternoon.  Avoid this schema forlower prices.

7.         Knowwhat kind of a jet you’re flying on.  Ifyou’re deathly afraid of small planes, read the information in fine printbecause sometimes that standard-airline flight is contracted out to a smallcompany with planes smaller than you might feel comfortable flying on.

8.         Don’tchoose the last flight of the day from your departure point to destinationpoint.  If something goes wrong, there isno ‘next flight’ to take.

9.         Steerclear of holidays.  Plan well in advanceso that you have a few days off before the holiday.  Traveling on December 22nd and onDecember 24th are two very different things and have two verydifferent price tags.

10.      Choose your seat when you book online.  Flying to Paris smack dab in the middle of a row of fiveseats is not a fun way to spend a night. Aisle seats and window seats are highly preferred, but a lot of peopledon’t know that you can reserve them online through most bookers’websites.  If you wait until you arriveat the airport, most likely all of these coveted seats will already be taken.

Air travel still has a lot of fun left in iteven if it doesn’t have its novelty any more for most of us.  Take the opportunity to relax during yourflight and to get ready for what’s waiting for you in your destination whetherit’s work or fun.  Without a plan ofattack, booking plane tickets can be a big hassle.  If you follow these basic tips for buyingyour airplane ticket, you should be much better able to sit back, relax, andenjoy flying the friendly skies.
